Following a dramatic expansion, centered around an AIA award-winning design by the architectural firm JSA Inc, Exeter Hospital wanted to display a visual history of their transformation from a cottage hospital into a modern, state of the art regional hospital. We were a wealth of information, primarily in the form of archival material, written and photographic, as well as an oral history provided by a particularly well-versed employee of the institution. Of course, the story couldn't have started out more dramatically: on the day they opened the house doors (literally, a house) in 1897, there was a train wreck with major injuries to contend with, a baptism by fire. The History Wall began its life as the 48-foot configuration shown in the top photo. Shortly afterward, the Airmap display with four DV monitors was created as part of a NOAA/UNH parttnership with the hospital. The History Wall was recently expanded to an adjacent wall, adding 20 feet of additional display material.
