The new atrium designed by JSA as part of a major expansion of Portsmouth Regional Hospital features a wall set aside for focal and local interest. Designed to reflect the nautical history of Portsmouth, the wall features an 1867 map of Portsmouth Harbor, and a display system designed to allow for maximum flexibility in presenting the work of local artists. Vertical components reminiscent of wooden sailing vessel construction, and horizontal elements reminiscent of modern ship construction, are infinitely repositionable, and can display flat work on three vertical planes (depths) as well as dimensional work with the swapping of mounting components. The initial exhibition shown here (as well as the photograph of the system), is by photographer Philip Case Cohen.
This is phase one of a two-phase program. Still to come are eight niches or alcoves, set as landmarks on approximately 150 ft of ground floor corridors. Additiional photography of phase one will be posted August 2010.
